To be a good painter, it helps to be able to take your own reference photos. Back in high school, before I started painting, I wanted to be a photographer for a hot minute. Specifically, a photo journalist for National Geographic, ideally of marine life and beach scenes (of course). Although I moved on from that career goal, I'm always on the lookout for interesting scenes, no matter what I'm out doing. I've found that I'm especially drawn to isolated subjects, the amazing lines and geometries that appear on the backs of buildings, and of course.... bright, eye-popping colors.
These are a few of the photographs I've taken over the years that I think are pretty cool on their own -- even without my amped-up colors and bold outlines.
AND -- as a special treat for you all -- I've also included my husband, Colin's, best photographs in this collection as well!
I hope you enjoy looking at these scenes as much as we enjoyed capturing them! Happy Photography Day!
